The second season of the Vinland Saga is almost here. Twin Engine, the anime production company, has finally offered a new look at the next phase of Thorfinn’s quest, which is expected to debut in January 2023, following the announcement and teaser trailer aired last summer.
The first season of Vinland Saga features Thorfinn, a young Viking warrior who joins a gang of mercenaries in order to seek revenge for his father’s death at the hands of Askeladd, the mercenaries’ commander. When we last saw Thorfinn, he was faced with the prospect of a life other than vengeance, as well as the ramifications of a catastrophic decision committed in a fit of rage.
Flashbacks to Thorfinn’s time as a mercenary under Askeladd’s command, scenes of Leif Erikson and Thorfinn’s great uncle Thorkell interacting with new characters, and shots of King Canute standing atop a pile of treasure and brushing his hand across the scar he received during the first season’s climax are all shown in the new trailer.
The real-life accounts of major Viking historical figures such as King Canute the Great, Thorfinn himself, and Leif Erikson are commonly mixed with more dramatic fictitious aspects in the Vinland Saga.
Shhei Yabuta, the director of the first season of Vinland Saga, said in a tweet earlier this week that the same animators who worked on the first season would be returning for the second season. In the United States, the series will be available to watch on Amazon, exactly as it was in the first season.
We can’t wait to see what happens next in this epic tale! Rest assured that we will be updating this page whenever we get new information, so stay tuned.
These statements prompted many fans to believe that, despite their best efforts, the second season of Vinland Saga was still a long way off.
Given the project’s size and, being a Mappa production, the studio’s other big productions (Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 3, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, and Chainsaw Man), most people expected the series to be released later in 2023.
When a season 2 event was announced in June 2022, giving fans a release date, that forecast was easily surpassed.
There has been no official statement about when and where the second season of Vinland Saga will be available to watch.
Season 1 broadcast on NHK General and was available to stream on Amazon Prime internationally. Season 2’s airing on the same channels is, however, far from certain.
Season 1 will be available on more streaming services ahead of the second season, according to the following announcement:
This second season is expected to see higher demand, particularly in international markets. As a result, the streaming rights may be sold before 2023.
Mappa has confirmed that Vinland Saga Season 2 will be created after months of speculation. Season 1 was created by Wit Studio, therefore this is a change.
In May, some websites said that director Shuuhei Yabuta and mangaka Makoto Yukimura had announced the studio transition in a Twitter Space.
Those allegations were later refuted as a mistranslation, but the message was clear.
Many important members of the Vinland Saga team have left Wit Studio since the first season aired in 2019. Shuuhei Yabuta, the director, and Takahiko Abiru, the character designer, recently worked on Attack on Titan: The Final Season, another anime in which Wit was replaced by Mappa.
The rest of Season 1’s key cast members have been confirmed to return for Season 2 of Vinland Saga.
Among the new voice actors, Yuu Hayashi as Olmar and Shunsuke Takeuchi as Einar, who previously performed Mikey and Makoto in Tokyo Revengers, are two of the most famous.
