Prim is chosen as the district’s female tribute, much to Katniss’ chagrin. Katniss quickly volunteers to take Prim’s place. The male tribute is then chosen. It’s Peeta Mellark, and Katniss recalls how Peeta handed her bread from his family’s bakery years ago when she was looking for food for her family in the waste bins behind the town shops. Katniss believes he saved her that day. Katniss and Peeta bid farewell to their friends and family before boarding a train bound for the Capitol. During the trip, she and Peeta persuade Haymitch, their Games mentor and the person in charge of obtaining presents from sponsors, to take his responsibilities seriously.
