One of One Piece’s most adored characters is Portgas D. Ace, who also plays a significant role in the plot both before and after the time-skip. Ace, the son of Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King, was raised alongside his sworn brothers Sabo and Luffy.
He played a significant role in the first half of the story and was directly involved in the Marineford War, the biggest event of the Great Pirate Era making him one of the most popular characters in not only the story but also among the fans.
Ace was born after the death of his father, the King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger and after evading the Navy and the Cipher Pol for months, he was finally born. According to his mother, Portgas D. Rouge, Roger had already picked the names for him.
Had he been born a girl, he was to be named Ann and in case he was a boy, the name would be Ace. Shortly after naming him, Portgas D. Rouge died.
Being a top-ranking commander under one of the four emperors of the sea is only one of the reasons for his being captured by the Marines. He was also Gol D. Roger’s son, the King of the Pirates. His lineage and strength were the main reasons why the navy tries to make him a warlord. Ace never agrees to that, so he becomes one of the most wanted criminals.
When the series introduces him in the “Alabasta” arc, Ace is looking to capture Blackbeard. Blackbeard betrays the Whitebeard pirates by killing their first division commander and stealing the Yami Yami no Mi. Ace, being his direct commander, feels responsible for his crimes and sets out to sea alone in his pursuit.
