Smash Or Pass Nana

Ai Yazawa is the creator of the Japanese comic series Nana. From May 2000 to May 2009, it was serialized in the monthly shjo manga publication Cookie before taking a break. Nana Osaki and Nana Komatsu, two ladies who relocate to Tokyo at the age of 20, are the centerpiece of the series. The plot revolves around Nana O’s quest of fame and Nana K’s pursuit of romance, all while Nana O and Nana K struggle to keep their friendship together.

When they both travel to Tokyo after turning 20 on March 5, 2001, Nana Osaki and Nana Komatsu (also known as Hachi)[a] cross paths: Nana O. to pursue a professional music career with her band, Black Stones, on her own merit; and Nana K. to join her friends and move in with her lover. Despite having distinct personalities and goals, the two ladies discover they have something in common and, by chance, decide to share an apartment. But as they pursue their goals, problems with fame and love start to put their friendship to the test.

After discovering that her boyfriend had cheated on her, Nana K. dumps him, while Nana O. reconciles with her ex-boyfriend Ren, the guitarist for Japan’s band, as the two ladies continue to live their lives in Tokyo.

Nana K. later develops an ad hoc romance with Trapnest’s bassist Takumi as a result of Nana O. and Ren’s relationship, making her friendship with Nana O. unpleasant while simultaneously falling in love with Black Stones guitarist Nobu. Ultimately, Nana K. decides to wed Takumi after finding out she’s pregnant. At the prospect of losing Nana K., Nana O. begins to experience panic attacks, but she later decides to use the fame and success of Black Stones to lure Nana K. away from Trapnest. The relationship between Nana O. and Ren is made public by a tabloid magazine, which boosts Black Stones’ popularity and leads to their official debut.
